Mosquito Control in Las Vegas

For a long time mosquitoes were something Las Vegas largely got to ignore. That changed with the arrival and establishment of Aedes aegypti across the valley, and the character of the problem changed with it. This is not the mosquito people remember from a lakeside holiday. It bites during the day rather than at dusk, it bites ankles and legs from below, it stays close to where it emerged, and — the part that matters most for treatment — it breeds in containers rather than in ponds and marshes.

Why Container Breeding Changes the Job

A traditional mosquito programme targets standing water at the landscape scale. Aedes aegypti makes that mostly irrelevant, because it will complete its life cycle in a teaspoon of water. The productive sites on a Las Vegas property are small, close to the house, and easy to walk past every day:

• The saucer under a potted plant
• A pot with a blocked drainage hole
• A bucket, a wheelbarrow, an unused planter
• A pet water bowl that does not get emptied
• A clogged roof gutter or a scupper that holds a puddle
• A tarpaulin, a boat cover, or a folded pool cover
• Corrugated downspout extensions and the bases of drainage pipes
• An irrigation valve box holding water
• A neglected fountain or water feature
• A pool or spa that has been off for a while

Because the flight range is short — often measured in tens of metres — a biting problem in your yard is usually being produced in your yard or your immediate neighbour's. That is unusually good news, because it means the source can actually be found and removed.

Our Mosquito Control Process

Source Inspection

We walk the property looking specifically for containers, and we look in the places people do not: behind the shed, under the deck, in the side return, inside irrigation and meter boxes, and at the gutter line. Most visits turn up several sites the owner had not registered as water at all.

Source Reduction

Tipping, draining, drilling a drainage hole, unblocking a gutter. This is unglamorous, it costs nothing, and it does more than any product we can apply. We would rather remove a breeding site than treat around it.

Larviciding Where Water Has to Stay

Some water cannot simply be removed — an ornamental feature, a rainwater store, an irrigation box that fills. Those get a larvicide, typically a bacterial product that targets mosquito larvae specifically and is safe around the fish, birds and pets that use the feature.

Harbourage Treatment

Adult mosquitoes rest through the heat of the day in cool, shaded, humid vegetation — the underside of dense shrubs, ivy on a block wall, the shaded north side of the house, low ground cover. Treating that resting habitat is what reduces the biting, and it is very different from spraying an open lawn.

Follow-Up Through the Season

Mosquito control is a seasonal programme rather than a one-off. New containers appear, gutters block again, and neighbouring properties contribute. Regular visits through the warm months keep the population from re-establishing.

What Does Not Work

Ultrasonic repellent devices do not work; this has been tested repeatedly. Bug zappers kill large numbers of harmless insects and very few mosquitoes. Citronella candles produce a small effect within a very short radius and none beyond it. Broadcast fogging of an entire yard hits adults present at that moment, kills a great deal of non-target insect life, and does nothing about the container in the side return that will produce the next generation within days. We would rather spend the visit finding that container.

Why It Matters Beyond the Nuisance

Aedes aegypti is the vector for several diseases that are not currently circulating locally in southern Nevada, and West Nile virus is present in the region in other species. Nobody needs alarming about this, and it is a reasonable part of why the Southern Nevada Health District tracks these populations and why reducing breeding on your own property is worth the ten minutes it takes.

Signs You Have a Breeding Problem

Daytime Biting

Bites in the afternoon rather than at dusk point at Aedes rather than the species people expect.

Bites on Ankles and Lower Legs

This species approaches low and from behind, which is why the bites cluster below the knee.

Mosquitoes Indoors

They are content indoors and will breed in a houseplant saucer.

Larvae in Standing Water

Small wriggling larvae in any container that has held water for a week. If you find them, you have found the source.

Keeping the Property Clear

Once a week, walk the yard and tip anything holding water. That habit is the single most effective mosquito control measure available to a Las Vegas household, and it beats every product on the shelf. Drill drainage holes in plant saucers, change pet bowls daily, keep gutters and scuppers clear, and keep pool and spa water circulating even when they are not in use. If a neighbouring property has an abandoned pool, that is worth a call to the health district — it is a genuinely large source and there is a process for it.
