Moth Control in Las Vegas

Moth calls split cleanly into two problems that share a name and nothing else. One is a pantry problem and one is a wardrobe problem, and the reason it matters is that the treatments have almost nothing in common. Before anything else we work out which you have, because treating the wrong one is a wasted visit and the real problem carries on quietly.

Pantry Moths

Indian meal moths are the ones that fly out of a cupboard when the door opens, in a slightly drunken, fluttering way. The adults are small with a distinctive two-tone wing — pale at the base, coppery at the tip. They damage nothing themselves; the larvae do the eating, and they arrive in a product bought from a shop rather than flying in through a window.

Where They Actually Are

The infested item is often not the obvious one. Flour and cereal get checked; the things that get missed are birdseed, dry pet food, nuts, dried fruit, spices, rice, decorative dried arrangements and, more often than people expect, a bag of grain-based product bought months ago and pushed to the back. Larvae also crawl a surprising distance to pupate, so silk cocoons turn up along the top edge of a cabinet, in the hinge recess of a door, and on the ceiling above the pantry.

How We Deal With Them

We find and remove the source, which is the treatment. Then the cabinets get emptied and cleaned, with particular attention to the shelf-edge crevices and the corners where cocoons attach. We treat the crevices rather than the shelves themselves — we are not putting product where food goes — and we place pheromone monitors so we can tell whether the population is falling or whether a second source was missed. That monitoring is what stops the cycle where somebody clears the pantry, sees a moth three weeks later, and starts over.

Clothes Moths

These behave completely differently. They avoid light, they barely fly, and they are usually noticed as damage rather than as insects. The larvae eat keratin — wool, cashmere, silk, felt, fur, feathers — and they concentrate on the parts of a garment people do not check: under a collar, inside a cuff, along a seam, and anywhere carrying body oils or perspiration, which they need as a nutrient source. A clean, stored wool coat is far less attractive to them than a worn one.

Where They Concentrate

The undisturbed and the dark: the back of a wardrobe, a storage box under a bed, the edge of a rug beneath furniture that never moves, a stored winter duvet, the felt under a piano lid. In Las Vegas we find them most often in garment storage that has been sealed up and forgotten — a valley where a wool coat is used for a few weeks a year is a valley full of undisturbed wool.

How We Deal With Them

We inspect the storage and identify what is actually infested, treat the harbourage — wardrobe crevices, skirting junctions, under fixed furniture, along rug edges — and tell you what needs laundering or dry cleaning rather than treating. Both hot laundering and a spell in a freezer kill every life stage, and for a garment that cannot be washed the freezer is the answer. We then place monitors and check back.

What the Home Remedies Actually Do

Cedar blocks and lavender sachets repel adult moths weakly at best, and do nothing to larvae already in a garment. Cedar's oils lose their effect within a year or so and a cedar-lined closet stops working long before people stop trusting it. Mothballs work, because they are a fumigant — but they only work in a genuinely sealed container, they are a health consideration in a lived-in room, and the smell is close to permanent in fabric. None of these are a substitute for finding what is infested.

Scattered, uneven holes rather than the clean round hole of a burn or a snag — often only found when a garment comes out of storage.

Bare Patches on a Rug

Grazed pile at the edge of a rug under a sofa or a bed, where it is never walked on or vacuumed.

Keeping Them Out Afterwards

For the pantry: decant dry goods into airtight glass or hard plastic rather than leaving them in the packet, and check a new bag of birdseed or pet food before it comes into the house. For the wardrobe: launder or dry clean woollens before they go away for the season, because what draws a clothes moth is the residue left on something that has been worn. Then put them somewhere sealed — a lidded box or a zipped bag — instead of leaving them hanging in the open. Every few months, shift the stored boxes and run a vacuum under the furniture that never moves. Disturbance alone discourages clothes moths more than any repellent does.
