Tick Control in Las Vegas

Tick problems in Las Vegas look nothing like tick problems in a wooded part of the country, and the difference matters because the standard advice does not apply here. The tick that dominates in this valley is the brown dog tick, and it is unusual in one important respect: it can complete its entire life cycle indoors. It does not need woodland, tall grass or leaf litter. It is content in a house, a garage, a kennel or a block wall, and it will persist through a Las Vegas summer with no outdoor stage at all.

That single fact changes everything about how the problem behaves. A tick infestation here is frequently a building infestation, and treating the yard while ignoring the structure is why some properties never seem to clear.

Why the Brown Dog Tick Is Different

Almost every other tick species drops off its host to moult and lays eggs in vegetation. The brown dog tick drops off and climbs — into a wall crack, a skirting junction, the gap behind a kennel panel, the underside of a bed frame, a block wall weep hole. A single engorged female lays a few thousand eggs, and they hatch in the same building.

The practical consequences are that ticks appear on walls and ceilings rather than only on the dog, that they concentrate wherever the animal sleeps rather than along a fence line, and that an infestation can climb sharply while the yard looks entirely innocent.

Health Reasons to Deal With It Promptly

Brown dog ticks transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is present in the Southwest and is a serious illness in both people and dogs. This is not a reason to panic about a single tick, and it is a good reason not to let an established population run in a house with children or animals in it. If anyone in the household develops a fever and a rash after tick exposure, that is a conversation for a doctor, not for us — but it is worth knowing why we treat this species with more urgency than we would treat, say, silverfish.

Indoors

We work the places the animal rests and the vertical surfaces near them: skirting junctions, cracks in stucco and plaster, behind picture frames, the joints of bed and crate frames, and the corners of a garage or laundry where a dog bed sits. Ticks climbing a wall is a distinctive brown dog tick sign and it tells us the population is inside.

Outdoors

Kennel runs, the shaded side of the house, block wall weep holes and cracks, the underside of decking and the gaps in a patio slab. Not the middle of the lawn — that is not where they are.

Indoor Treatment

Crack and crevice application into the harbourage, combined with a growth regulator to break the cycle. Surface spraying alone misses the population, which is inside the cracks rather than on them.

Outdoor Treatment

Perimeter and harbourage treatment focused on the structure, the block walls and the kennel area rather than broadcast across a yard.

Coordinating With Your Vet

The animal needs a veterinary tick preventative at the same time the property is treated. If the dog is still carrying ticks it reseeds the house after every treatment, and if the house is untreated the dog picks them up again indoors. Both halves, same window.

Follow-Up

Tick eggs are protected during the first treatment, so a return visit timed to hatch is part of the job rather than an optional extra.

Keep the dog on a year-round veterinary preventative. Check the animal after time outdoors, particularly around the ears, between the toes and under the collar. Wash bedding hot and regularly. Seal the cracks around kennel panels and in the garage, since sealing harbourage is genuinely effective against this species in a way it is not against most outdoor ticks. And keep an eye on block wall weep holes near a kennel run, which are a favourite and easy to overlook.
